Methodology
Each page is built from public records by a fixed set of rules, written out here so you can check them.
Licensed mold-remediation companies
- Source: TDLR's mold-remediation company licence file, which TDLR updates daily. We download it every day.
- Only licences with the status "current" are listed. Repeated rows for the same licence number are listed once.
- Companies are grouped by the county of the mailing address in the licence file. That address shows where a company is based, not where it works, so we never claim a company serves a particular street or town.
- "Licensed" on this site means a Texas mold-remediation licence and nothing else. Texas does not license water-damage restoration.
- Companies are listed by city and name. We don't rate, rank or review them.
Flood, storm and freeze events
- Source: NOAA's Storm Events Database (NCEI), which is published about three months after the events.
- We count these event types as relevant to water damage: Flash Flood, Flood, Heavy Rain, Coastal Flood, Storm Surge/Tide, Hurricane, Hurricane (Typhoon), Tropical Storm, Tropical Depression, Extreme Cold/Wind Chill, Cold/Wind Chill, Frost/Freeze, Winter Storm, Ice Storm.
- Some events are recorded by county and others by National Weather Service forecast zone. Zone names such as "Inland Harris" are matched to their county.
- Event counts cover the past 24 months, and each event links to its NOAA record.
FEMA disaster declarations
- Source: FEMA's OpenFEMA disaster declarations summaries for Texas since 2021, downloaded daily.
- We show declarations of these incident types: Flood, Severe Storm, Hurricane, Tropical Storm, Coastal Storm, Severe Ice Storm, Winter Storm, Snowstorm. Fire, drought and pandemic declarations are left out.
Metro areas
Metros follow the U.S. Office of Management and Budget's 2023 metropolitan statistical areas:
- Houston: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Waller counties
- San Antonio: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina, Wilson counties
- Austin: Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, Williamson counties
- Dallas–Fort Worth: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Wise counties
When a metro gets a page
A metro page is published only if at least 5 companies with current licences are based in its counties, and at least 1 water-related FEMA declaration or NOAA event was recorded there in the past 24 months. Areas that don't meet both tests don't get a page.
